Bidh sin a’ cù nuadh againn ~ We’re getting a new dog!

Uill mo chairdean, , tha i sgòthachan an seo agus tha i fionnar an-diugh.
Well my friends, it’s cloudy & cool here & it’s cool.

Bidh sin a’ cù nuadh againn ~ We’re getting a new dog! But not our usual Chihuahua addition. This fellow will mature at around 38 – 40 kgs {85 – 90 lbs in American, eh?} … just a little fellow. :)

So why would a pair of peaceful loving individuals like us want to add any more mayhem to their quiet ‘Chihuahua’ home? Well that’s a good question! This new ‘Chihuahua’ will at the time of maturity weigh more than 10 times the average size of one of our Chihuahuas. Unfortunately the temperament of the German Shepherd putting him in a ‘herd’ of Chihuahuas might be like Gulliver living in Lilliput. The noise & mayhem will most likely not change … much. :)

This adventure all began when we decided it was time to have another big dog around the house. And, as you may know, there’s nothing like having a large, polite, big ol’ dog lying around the house blocking the doorways & leaving bloody big tufts of fur on floor to collect in the wheels & axles of wheelchairs!

So we’ve spent the past while web-surfin’ for a large dog, not specifically for a German Shepherd breed … at first, but definitely searching for one to be a suitable Service Dog as well. Time for Molly, my present helper to kick back & be treated like the Queen she is & get spoiled! Okay, okay a lot more than I already do. :)

We checked the Rescue sites at first but eventually graduated to the German Shepherd Dog Rescue sites & then to the GSD breeder kennel sites. In the process we also come in contact with a whole other breed of dog that tweaked the breeder in us. A really very interesting & beautiful breed of dog … but that’s for another posting.

And then we landed on an Ontario breeder website & found what was described as the ‘perfect pup’!

This Ontario breeder raises German Shepherd Dogs; & trains dogs & train the trainers. Here’s an excerpt of the message we received from the breeder on my soon to be new Cruiser.

“He is a very calm, sensible, gentle, affectionate, soft spoken boy with a heart of gold. His obedience is great and his manners are even better. He has been trained primarily to be a partner, wheelchair assistant and indicator for the deaf. His name is Cruiser, he is 10 months on Oct 15th. He is gentle as a lamb and good looking to boot.”

Cruiser ~ the Polite

He’s expected to arrive from Ontario probably on the 23rd of this month. Pam’ll have to drive to Saskatoon to pick him up. A trip of about 10 hours of driving & hopefully there won’t be a long wait at the airport for Cruiser’s flight to arrive.

Of course I do not need to say there’ll be more on this wee fellow in future postings as well as on any of the new Chihuahuas we’ll be looking at in the near future.

Uill, gun tèid e gu math dhomh an-duigh
Well, wish me luck for today …

  1. Fine looking fellow that Cruiser, I am sure you will enjoy him very much and he will be a big help to you. I also like the little ones in the other picture as they remind me of our Oscar we had for 17 years, he was a great little dog. What is the other kind you are thinking of breeding?

Up to around 20 degrees here yesterday and today had frost a couple of nights but days are warming up nice.

  2. Congratulations! Cruiser looks very sweet. His head already looks bigger than Cocoa.

Hope Molly and Chesney enjoy the new family member.

  3. Thanks Sandy ~ I wouldn’t be surprised if his head is twice the size of Cocoa! :D

There’ll probably be an initial reaction to ‘Cruise ~ the Bruiser’ but that should pass before too long. They’re both familiar with having a big dog around … it’s not been that long since Jordan went on his last adventure.

At least I hope! Of course Molly has to also deal with her role as a working dog being usurped! But spoiling her should help or make fat as a tick! :)

  4. What a beautiful new baby! Congratulations!

  5. Yes he is! Really looking forward to meeting him Monday evening! Keep watching here for more pics & stories. I’m sure the 3 fur-kids will be generating a few over the next while! :D
