I wrote this posting from a hotel room in PA {Prince Albert} on the 3rd day of our flight from a waterless apartment in LA {La Ronge}. About a week ago, Wednesday or Thursday, not sure which but the water main pipes froze up. This water main feeds a computer & remote education service; a veterinary clinic & 1 apartment… ours & in the neighbouring building where the local EMT service with it’s 4 ambulances. On the morning of 4th day of no water we loaded up the dogs & moved to PA . On the bright side Pam was to start a 3 day SW training course on the Tuesday so we had Sunday & Monday to do as we please away from home … like soak in a bath & wash, & wash & wash in the precious water … & shop at my favourite tailor … Mark’s Work Warehouse & get my hair cut … finally! This experience really made us realize how much we depend upon water in our daily lives & how easily we took it for granted! We had to rely on our landlady filling up a bucket & couple of jugs daily. That most very intimate experience of washing left me so skanky that even the dogs couldn’t stand to be near me.
We both drink large amounts of water & use it a lot in our cooking & of course we flush! Thank goodness the Chihuahuas are very small desert creatures used to small amounts of moisture!
We’re back home is our apartment now & for some odd reason whenever I turn on the tap now I’m less inclined to let the tap run on when brushing my teeth or getting a glass of water …
This isn’t the first time that we’ve lived without water or for that matter, even indoor plumbing but this time has sure brought ‘home’ the whole ramification of Global ‘WARNing’ & importance of our water resources. Both Pam & I have always tried to pay attention to our own waste & pollution but this waterless experience has us paying more attention to how we use this stuff called water! The very existence of this planet depends upon it & it is my responsibility to do something about it! And each & everyone else’s too!!
“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
Water, water everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.
1. All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody sun at noon
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the moon.
2. Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath, nor motion.
Idle as a painted ship,
Upon a painted ocean
3. Water, water everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink.
Water, water everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.
