Oot n’ aboot LA {La Ronge, SK} …
Saturday was a washout here for yard sales … too wet so we only found 2. Came across a couple of ‘longhorn’ racks for hanging more hats … now I guess I’ll have to start looking for some new hats too!
Anyway instead of wandering around LA we decided to wander further up the road to a place called Wadin Bay just north of LA. This is the area that had the forest fire when we up here 2 years ago. As you can see it leaves a big mark on the land but when you look at the forest floor you see lots of new life that requires the heat of forest fires to create the right environment for new growth. ie: The Jack Pine trees themselves. Common under-story shrubs found in a jack pine stand are prickly rose, bunchberry, bearberry, blueberry, beaked hazelnut & Labrador tea.
“Forest fires are natural in the continental boreal forest, or taiga. Jack pine is remarkably adapted to the ravages of fire. The rough, scaly, thick, dark bark provides some protection, but the remarkable feature is the serotinous cones. The resinous cones, 4 to 5 cm long, with their seeds enclosed, open when exposed to heat. Mature cones are often retained on the trees for many years. “an excerpt from ;

Here’s a few things we don’t see too often back on PEI … well maybe they do but it’s not really called a ‘Roundup’ back east. Sounds like something you’d do with outlaws or cattle, eh?
It’s been a while since I’ve actually seen screws & nails come in anything other than those damn plastic containers!
The loose stones (rocks actually) of many of the northern gravel roads create a lot damaging marks on the windscreens & headlights on many of the vehicles. A common sight around here on a lot of the vehicles are the broken windscreen.
On PEI this would be spelled as ‘bare’ especially during the summer season in a resort Cavendish …
But definitely something we are on look out for when walking the dog here in LA … although Molly, The Princess Chihuahua could take one. Even without her Magic Lasso!

Well, wish me luck for today …
